Bananas are the simplest, most common items that can be found in every single Donkey Kong adventure game to this day. They first appeared in Donkey Kong Country as simple yellow bananas which can be picked up by either Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong throughout each available stage which were able to grant the Kongs an extra life with each bunch of 100 that were collected in each run of a stage. The Banana item made it into all three Donkey Kong Country titles for the SNES as generic yellow bananas, while they served an entirely different purpose and took on slightly altered appearances in Donkey Kong 64.
In the Nintendo 64 installment, the Banana item came in five different colors: yellow, red, purple, blue, and green. They must be collected by each Kong in each of the eight levels in order to face the bosses based in each level through Troff and Scoff. Scoff must be fed a certain number of Bananas as indicated by the number label on the door leading to the level's boss. Each Kong must unload their total supply of Bananas collected in the level unto him in order to make him heavy enough to allow Troff to reach the lock on the door and unlock it with the key.
The basic Banana item underwent many twists and alterations in this installment alone, from Banana Coins, Banana Medals, and even Golden Bananas. In DK: King of Swing and DK: Jungle Climber, the Banana item returned in the same form and carrying the same function as it had back when it was introduced in the original Donkey Kong Country.
