Watermelon is the fruit which, unlike the various other types of edible substance used as deadly weapon ammo, plays the role of the Kongs' vitality in Donkey Kong 64.

The Watermelon is represented on-screen as a whole with four individual slices, whereas each slice counts for one hit. Throughout the game's progression, the Kongs' total Watermelon supply will increase from four pieces(one whole), to twelve pieces(three wholes).

As hits are taken, the current Watermelon supply shows up on-screen and reveals a single slice disappearing from one of the wholes. Lose every slice and, naturally, it's a Game Over.
